Re-using wire fencing

When I got plot E7 I inherited a great big roll of wire fencing. I didn't think it would be right to chuck it so I've been cutting bits off and using it as trellis for plants to grow up. Its really difficult to use because its so heavy, but with a bit of perseverance it's fantastic.

Planted a couple of bamboos, a wisteria, clematis, honeysuckle, passionflower and a yellow stemmed willow around the bottom of the section of fence to create a natural screen.

First fire of the Autumn

We can have a fire any time of day from November onwards. I love the smell of bonfires this time of year, however, some of my fellow plot holders are burning plastic and other toxic things, which leaves a horrid pungent stench in the air. I went home with a pain in my chest and shortness of breath the other day. My fire on the other hand was just twigs and roots and woody stuff, smelt great. I have been collecting material all year for the fire and had a great huge heap of stuff to burn but I made sure that I lifted and checked for wildlife each bit I burned. As it happens a vole ran out of the pile which validates the process of checking before burning. Well done me.

Autumn allotment

Despite the murky Autumn weather there is still a great deal growing and producing. All the kale I put in is harvested regularly and should see us through the winter. Got sprouts just beginning to form and suede and cabbages galore. I made 'crispy seaweed' t'other day using curly kale, it was so delicious, next time I make it I'll take some photos and blog the procedure.
